A five-run sixth inning helped cut a seven-run deficit to two, and Morgan Ensberg's homer trimmed it one, but the Astros couldn't get over the hump. Brandon Duckworth struggled with his command in his second start, surrendering eight runs in four innings before the bullpen held its ground.

St. Louis' bullpen narrowly escaped with the third straight win for Jason Marquis, who was inefficient but struck out eight. So Taguchi and Mark Grudzielanek each recorded two-run doubles to lead the offensive attack for the first-place Cards.
