ST. LOUIS -- Two weeks after an apparent triple play was overturned, the Cardinals finally got one. In the second inning of Thursday night's Cards-Padres game at Busch Stadium, San Diego catcher Ramon Hernandez hit into a 3-6 triple play.

Phil Nevin and Brian Giles opened the inning with consecutive singles to right field against Matt Morris, bringing up Hernandez. With both runners going, Hernandez hit a liner to Albert Pujols at first base. Pujols snared it for the first out, tagged first to retire Giles, and threw to shortstop David Eckstein, who tagged second to get Nevin.

It was the first Cardinals triple play since Aug. 1, 2002, when the Marlins' Eric Owens hit into one at what was then called Pro Player Stadium. J.D. Drew caught the ball, threw to Edgar Renteria to double off Mike Lowell, and Renteria threw to first, where Tino Martinez's tag got Derrek Lee. Chuck Finley was pitching for the Cardinals that day.

On April 24 of this year, an apparent Cardinals triple play was overturned against the Astros.
