May 31: OF targets swift return from right knee injury
O'Neill, who was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier this week, retroactive to May 26, due to right knee inflammation, received a cortisone injection on Thursday and feels better. The right-handed hitter, who is missed in Boston's injury-plagued starting lineup, is hopeful he can return when he is first eligible on June 5. An MRI taken on Wednesday revealed no structural damage.

"I’m hoping to come off in the minimum amount of days," O'Neill said. "I’ve made a lot of progress the last couple days. I like where I’m at. See what it looks like when the buildup starts."

May 30: DH Masataka Yoshida to take BP on Saturday
Roughly a month after he went on the injured list with a left thumb strain, Yoshida started swinging the bat again, starting with tee work Thursday. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Yoshida will advance to live batting practice prior to Saturday's game. If Yoshida is pain free in his BP sessions, he could go on a Minor League rehab assignment soon. Yoshida is also trying to find the best thumb guard to protect his hand.

“I think it all comes down to having no pain," Yoshida said. "If I have no pain, I think I’m ready to go. Some thumb guards are on the way. We’ll give a try to every single one of them and see which one is the best.”

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

DH (left thumb strain)
Expected return: Some point in June
Yoshida will take live batting practice at Fenway Park on June 1, marking the first time he has done so since he was placed on the injured list a month ago. He has been doing tee work in recent days. If Yoshida can take batting practice without discomfort, he expects to ramp up toward a Minor League rehab assignment soon. (Last updated: May 31)

RHP (damaged UCL in right elbow)
Expected return: 2025
Whitlock will not pitch again until some point in 2025 after he had his UCL repaired by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas in Birmingham, Ala., on May 30. On the bright side, the righty avoided Tommy John surgery and instead underwent an internal brace repair, a procedure that has become more frequent for pitchers with UCL injuries. Whitlock had a 1-0 record and 1.96 ERA in four starts for the Red Sox this season. (Last updated: May 30)

RHP (right lat strain)
Expected return: TBD
Mata, who was in the late stages of his comeback from a right hamstring strain, has now been diagnosed with a right lat strain. The Red Sox have stopped Mata's Minor League rehab assignment, which means he can start with a fresh 30-day clock once he is cleared to pitch in games again.

Mata, Boston's No. 27 prospect, is out of options, meaning he needs to be placed on the Major League roster once he is healthy to avoid being designated for assignment. (Last updated: May 29)

60-DAY INJURED LIST

1B (torn cartilage in left rib cage)
Expected return: No earlier than June 21
Casas, who suffered torn cartilage in his left rib cage when he fouled off a 3-1 pitch on April 20, has made significant progress but hadn't been cleared to swing a bat as May came to a close.

"We have to be patient. Everything is trending in the right direction. I really don't know when he's going to start swinging, but just keep doing the things in the gym and taking ground balls," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "Hopefully that step is soon, but that's going to take a while. It's not easy [to know] because it’s just about feel. We’ll see. (Last updated: May 31)

RHP (right UCL surgery)
Expected return: Late July/early August
After signing with the Red Sox in February, Hendriks said his goal of coming back from Tommy John surgery would be right around the July 30 Trade Deadline. Hendriks has been playing catch on a daily basis. In Hendriks, who is also signed for next season, Boston will get a reliever who has been dominant in the past. It will be interesting to see how he is utilized in a bullpen that also includes Chris Martin and Kenley Jansen, though both of those pitchers have expiring contracts at the end of the season. Story underwent surgery on April 12. According to a statement from the Red Sox, Story "underwent a successful arthroscopic repair of the posterior labrum, with an open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture of the glenoid rim. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache."

Story won't play again until next season. Story dislocated his shoulder diving for a ball on April 5 in Anaheim. He was transferred from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL on April 19. (Last updated: April 19)
